Squirrel Tracks

The temperatures dipped into the teens this week, freezing things in their place. As I walked in the woods, my steps were loud as they broke through the crusted over landscape. I thought, “not a good day for hunting if it were hunting season!” These squirrel prints were perfectly, albeit temporarily preserved. They led to a nearby tree.

Tracks to the Tree

Interesting, how in winter we can actually see the path they took, the turns, the stops to investigate something. Despite the cold temperatures, the squirrels around here have kept very busy. Raiding my feeders daily. I saw one this morning, barely light out, racing across the yard. Thought it looked like a weasel, but did not have it’s white winter coat. There is a “family” of ermine living in the barn. They are more elusive than the squirrel, not wanting to be seen.
